Our friends Eleanor and Bill have two splendid homes and love to decorate for Christmas. One is a ranch near Granbury and the other is right near us in Plano.

Fortunately, Eleanor is really fun and loves to decorate.

Especially at Christmas time!!

Possibly the server with an array of compotes and dishes containing all kinds of Christmas "goodies" Credit must be given to Eleanor and her decorator friend Barbara White for the basics already in place at the home. We just bought "snow" and went to town.

Like many estates, the more we dig the more we find. This sale was no exception. The past few days we intense with the finding of antique dolls, jewelry, Tiffany, Lalique, sterling, and after realizing there seemed to be multiples, we counted 50 throw pillows and 5 couches. One can never have enough couches or pillows,,, "I guess". We also have CHAIRS! One set of 8 fabulous painted Chinese Chippendale style and one set of 6 extremely fine carved shieldback mahogany chairs. This has actually been an enjoyable challenge with the greatist family to do work for. It has been a pleasure to see such a caring and friendly unit. I must say that I have had the pleasure of meeting about a dozen family members that have all gotten along and all been extremely pleasant. It looks as though the weather is also going to be pleasant. There are alot of fine antiques and fine furniture at this sale. Our hours will be Friday from 9am to 5pm. Saturday we will open at 9am with a 25% discount. We may be eventually going to 50% off depending on the crowd. We will be closing at 4pm on Saturday. Please bring cash and a strong back. We love to stay on top of design trends in decorating, and one of our favorite ways to do that is to go to Dallas Home and Gift Market each January. We go through countless showrooms and seminars to keep up. Let's get right to the trends that we saw last week:

COLOR-

Color has returned to us after a few yearsof so much neutral- and in a BIG WAY. Check out some of the photos we were able to snap. And I do mean Color! Not neons, but definite strong "Candy colors" as they called them: Pink, blue, yellow, lime and more. It looks like the Skittles Factory has exploded @ the Dallas Mart.

Neutrals- always a good backdrop for color featuring much more in Grays for 2011vs. Whites and Creams.

The color of the year according to Pantone is HONEYSUCKLE. It's a strong pink with a bit of coral. They showed about four variations and I liked every single one. You'll see it in fashions and home decor.

STYLE-

Just heard the term "Steam Punk" for the first time a week ago and heard it again @ a "trends" seminar at the Market. (Look it up on Wikipedia) It's like "Industrial Modern" with a young contemporary twist.

Also: FARMINISTA. Google it. This is the influence of our farming roots on current design. Vintage items w/ an updated clean look: think galvinized metal, primitive wooden implements and things that look like they came from a farm.

INDUSTRIAL is still hot. This is young peoples Homage to the Past when the U.S. was in its Industrial Revolution phase. Just about anything dealing with mechanization and factories in metal and wood continues to be "hot" (Old gears, wire baskets, laundry bins, wooden molds, etc.)

And remember: technology is not about to replace "real" shopping. Our brick and mortar stores will never be fully replaced with on-line shopping because people still like to touch, feel and see items. Also, we love instant gratification- something online shopping & a U.P.S. package cannot match!

Our highly educated consumer likes a different, "stand out" item- unique and awesome- just like much of what you'll find at "our store"!

P.S. Global influences are strong this year; colors and patterns of India, Morocco, and China in particular. BRITTANNIA is a buzzword. Saw lots of the Union Jack, crowns, and Royal "stuff". Could it be Prince William & Kate, or "The King's Speech" Oscar nominations? Also, HOLIDAY colors will be updated traditional (red & lime vs. xmas green). You'll see lots of aqua, silver, pink, purple, lime and white, as well as vintage inspired motifs.

Okay, enough. We hope this info gives you some idea of the current trends, and as always you'll find lots of them at our store in Dallas. We'd love to hear your comments!

Market to Market

It's time again for the influx of out of town guests for the January Market at the World Trade Center in Dallas. The Trinity Design and Antique District has made a special attempt to keep up with the development of the area's new downtown EXPANSION bridge and central park.
We have also noticed a swing to a new look, including an Industrial appearance and Steam Punk. I guess the day of the massive collection of Pink Depression glass and Salt and Pepper nodders has now passed. It sure is hard to teach an old dog but I guess if the dog gets hungry enough, he'll learn to eat something different.

The Winning Goose

The last week has brought out a rash of comments concerning our drama duck. It seems that an obvious separation of male/female preferences has occured. Women have made their voices heard for the princess goose. Men have all voted for the "South of the Border" goose. Unfortunately "Princess Goose" votes have allowed her to win hands down. We're back from the Warrenton/Roundtop Antique Show and on the road to recovery. We have to be because we're preparing for the semi-annual street fair in the Riverfront Antique District, otherwise known as Trinity Antique District. In case you haven't heard of this there's about 10 city blocks involved, full of antiques and collectible dealers out on the streets and inside shops and malls selling their wares at great price points. All in all there are a couple hundred dealers participating. It runs from about the 900 to 1200 blocks of Riverfront, plus some of the side streets. Come to our store @ 147 Parkhouse for a map of participating vendors.

We're all spiffed up for the street sale and have brand new displays for you to peruse. We also have incredible markdowns on many items just for the sale. The sale is Sat. October 23, from 9-5. See you there!

The 36th Roundtop Connection

As time may have it, it has now been 36 wonderful shows. I will remember that always since our son was in a bassinet and is now a freshman at UT.
We are about to complete this seasons Semi-Annual Warrenton Antique show. Without a glitch, the show has been quite a success. The weather has cooperated , hurricanes and floods have stayed away and with one day remaining it looks as though the tornadoes have left us alone.
Despite the claims by the experts, sales have been great and our favorite times are about to start. REPLENISHING INVENTORY TIME!!!
We have manages to pick up a few pieces of furniture. The sweet chimney cupboard will make someone a perfect bathroom linen storage or kitchen cabinet.
Last night was prom night at Zapp Hall in Warrenton Texas and I feel we have the BEST seat in the house being the first booth in front of Royers. This year was overwhelming with the sheer numbers of participants at the party. The outfits were over the top with Mark Dooley leading the pack with his team of period dressed pirate's. The four lovely indian maidens were quite a sight as well as the many cross/dressers.
Our wine and cheese spread was destroyed withing a few hours. I think my favorite Dallas customer costume was Betty Bells Japanese geisha girl outfit. Just a little scary since I almost didn't recognize her.
Pack up will start tomorrow night and we will begin setting the store up for the Riverfront Antique District sale with will be on October 23rd from 9-5. The Country Garden Antique store will be set-up and ready to go.

You know, we don't conduct estate sales unless they're worth our time and yours. So here are the details in a nutshell. This is for a couple in Dallas that is very interesting.The husband had a sailboat and exotic cars at one time. The wife is on the "Hall of Fame" list of Dallas' top 10 Best Dressed! Wait 'till you fashionistas see this! We have a large selection of high end designer and couture clothing, shoes, purses and accessories. Some of the labels include Armani, Escada, Jay Jacks, Bob Mackie, Ferre, Chanel, Hermes, Monole Blahnik, Christian Loubotin, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Battega Veneta, Gucci, Louis Vuitton and more. There's also alot of Banana Republic and Ralph Lauren. Sizes are 4-8 in clothing and 6-7 in shoes. There are also ski clothes and mens clothes. The couple collected many things in their travels all over the world. Some of the high lights are an ivory netsuke collection, crystal from Lalique, Stuben, Baccarat, Waterford, costume Jewelry, records and books, many of which are coffee table books. Too many things to list.

The sale is located at 9016 Broken Arrow, Mapsco 24z in Bluffview. There will be no signage at first to help decrease conjestion. Opening day is Friday 9/10 10am-5pm. Sat and Sunday 10am-5pm. Parking is Very Limited since this is a short dead end street. You may need to park on Surry. Bring cash please. Check out the photos. Hope to see you there!

Yes, we are in the "thick of it", as the old Texans would say. With 100 degree weather every day now, it's time to get out and smell the roses. I'm not quite sure how we have managed to find the merchandise but we have added several key pieces to our inventory. One of my favorites is the velvet settee. Can anyone tell me why old velvet attracts me like it does??? I love it all and can't get enough of it. I managed to score on a sweet little Italian chandelier too.
To think Warrenton is just around the corner is making me nervous. HEEELLLLLPPPP!!!

What a wonderful time spent. Yes, we felt we struck GOLD in our relationships with Stephanie & Mike and also Gloria & Ted from http://www.shabbytownusa.com/ We all were able to put our heads together and come up with the same conclusion , by the look of the collections of these two couples, we are all in it for the long haul. Gold was also found in antique shops visited in Orange, Laguna, Balboa, Venice, Santa Monica and San Diego. Lets not forget the beaches, the flowers and my sons favorite late night "CRAIG FURGUSON SHOW" in which Mr. Furguson asked Ben if he was Justin Beavers, When he found out Ben was 18 he suggested Ben must be Justins grandfather. This was the highlight of Ben's trip.

In the famous words of our friend Portia Maloney, WORDS CANNOT DESCRIBE what we have seen so far on our trip to California, beginning with our friends Stephanie & Micheal Clark. We met them in our store in Dallas, and they said if you ever come out . . . When you first enter their house you are greeted by a display on the left wall of the awesome power of white. The first thing that cought my eye was a three foot trophy etched "FLOWER SHOW", and what a show it was. Limitless panels of French lace layered everywhere, among down pillows, beautiful fabrics, and fine French furniture. And you want to know why we can't find any old rose florals? Because they're all here in her house. Probably 200+ of them and other florals. Stephanie and Micheal took us on a whirlwind (more like hurricane) tour of beach and coastal towns Tuesday, and it even included antique shopping too. Stay tuned.

Why put the pressure on anyone else to try and come up with the perfect gift? What a fun time to stop by Portia Maloney's back yard Thursday night or Friday. This year the yard is loaded more than ever with some wonderful surprises. From crusty old flowerpots and potting benches, to concrete statuary and birdbaths, to rocks and seashells, to vintage outdoor pottery and iron accessories, and to the more elegant artwork and Antique yard furniture, you will find what you are looking for. FINALLY!!! Back and coming up for AIR!!! We survived the wonderful Roundtop-Warrenton Antique show, have finally gotten the shop back in order and have RESTOCKED with wonderful merchandise. Yes, we have been shopping and now it is time for the Annual Trinity District Sidewalk Sale. The sale will be a one day sale on May 1st and will begin officially at 9:00AM and run until 5:00PM. Shops and vendors will be displaying their items on the street and inside shops at discounted prices. What a great way to spend the day and get massive amounts of shopping accomplished. This area has really grown since we first moved to the area 17 years ago and with the new bridge coming next year and with developers combing the area it is sure to only get better.

Alan has been hard at work tweaking and rewiring everything that's sitting still our over 5,000 square foot store. We have 6 new alabaster lamps, a lamp made of shells (killer-the base lights up) one French made cherub lamp, a couple of stained glass fixtures and some beaded petite chaneliers. Come in and see them before we sell them or take them to the antique show at Zapp Hall in Warrenton Texas at the end of March.

TWELVE INCHES OF SNOW in DALLAS? WOW!
This is our son Ben and his friends Nate and Ethan Paulsen ( from Lots of Furniture Antiques, one block away from our store) They went sledding on the Trinity River Levee with homemade masonite sleds. They had a blast and slept very well that night.
Despite the bad weather, we had our large SUV and had less competition shopping last week and got some real treasures. My favorite pick? The 17" clam shell of course.

To Market--To Market

Dallas' Total Home and Gift Market is held at the Dallas World Trade Center twice a year. However, the January market is the time to go for a preview in home design trends for the year.

Alan and I went this year, as did our friend Portia Maloney (Garden Party ). Dallas is now home to the Internation Floral and Gift Center (translation:KILLER Floral displays!)

Our impressions on Color: the award goes to: Chartreuse, turquoise, and white. Secondary were orange, red and purple. According to Pantone the color for 2010 is turquoise. The Christmas (and floral) scene was dominated by chartreuse - usually mixed with white, silver, glitter and acrylic. Sometimes it was mixed with bright turquoise, purple and hot pink.

I hope burlap doesn't cause cancer because it was everywhere! Like 2009 natural decor was "IN"- even more twigs, branches, tree trunks, vines, and pine cones, but with a modern twist. These materials were seen in stark-like displays with metal, glass, acrylic, fiberglass, etc.

Check out the Two's Company "green" light fixture made with empty laundry soap bottles in every color! Way Cool! We tried to get all the "legal" photos we could while there.

P.S. Vendors we talked to reported an increase in orders (up to 25% increase) over last year, so that's a hopeful sign for the economy. YEAH!

New Inventory

An uplifting note of our progress here at Country Garden Antiques. The Estate sale we conducted was a complete success. Considering the deadline we were facing and the amount of inventory involved, we were able to sell 90% by Sunday. Monday we were able to meet with our client and surprise him with the clean and empty house.

Canton seemed to be very slow this month. At least half empty with dealers and few buyers. The forecast was probably the major contributor with freezing temperatures and snow lurking in the West. It's great exercise though!

Between tasks I have been working on an unusual upright antique metal showcase. The poor thing had been painted at least twice and left outside for no telling how long. With glass on all 4 sides and locking door, I decided I wanted to purchase it and tackle this project. So far I've managed to strip off layers of rust but am still not quite happy with the results. It is a lighted piece so I will be rewiring it soon. I can see the gleam in Gina's eyes knowing that her plans for a Vintage Christmas Ornament display is in the making.

We've managed to pick up a few items in the past few weeks. I will post a few of those photos too. Check out the huge and heavy Concrete dog water bowl!

BIZZY BBEEZZ This week ESTATE SALE !!!

So much has been going on that we just haven't had time to stop and smell the roses. This week we were asked to put together an emergency estate sale. The house has sold and needs to be empty by next Tuesday. The owner is now in a nursing home and the family home of 50 years is full. It looks as though the soonest we will be able to open will be 12:00 noon on Friday.

The location is great. Just 4 doors off Garland road and backing up to the Dallas Arboretum. The first street north of the Arboretum is Timplemore. We will be at 1155 Timplemore and sorry but due to the pressure of getting the sale together we will not be answering the door early. The owner started the Dallas Quilters Guild and was very active in sewing and quilting. We have several nice pieces of furniture including a punched tin pie safe, a Hoosier cabinet, tile back wash stand, decorated Iron and Brass Victorian bed, quilt tops, 4 sets of patio furniture, picnic table, concrete bench, flower pots, great BBQ, glassware, pottery, bedroom furniture, excellent side by side refrig, and also a freezer. Hours will be 12-5 Fri., 9-5 Sat, and 12Sun. I will be posting addition information on last weeks time we spent at the market learning about upcoming trends and ways to use the internet to promote our businesses. There was alot of helpful information. I'm not one for wasting time but this one seemed to have some possibilities

We were able to spend some "away" time, and even got snowed in at the log cabin for a while. After being out of town and ending the year on a positive note, we are getting back to business. Back from a quick trip to Kansas City we are exhausted,,, to say the least. Shopping went well but the family did come first. I was able to snap a photo of Ben on our big Green tractor.

The Big Monday Morning "Home Run"

This last week was good to us. Ususally, we are able to score a few nice items but this last week turned out to be better than normal. The iron pieces and concrete statuary was only surpassed by the early 19th Century Corner Cabinet and Painted Italian Dresser. With Christmas just around the corner the pressure is beginning to mount. Whether it's the "Mall" or "the mall", shopping is shopping to me. I love it all! This week we were able to get some wonderful items. Pink was in and so was white. The pink nightstands, pink wreath, pink lamps, pink pedestal, , white table, white shelf, white alabaster lamps(pr), white alabaster French clock, white Mother of Pearl knife and fork set, etc. We managed to pick up a Hermes scarf and several Italian scarves, a great pair of leather barrel chairs, Caucasian rug, Victorian Dome, jewelry, and to top it off.. an old 18 light French Chandalier. Yes, Santa was good to us this last week and he can be good to you too. Naughty or Nice.

DOWN BY THE "RIVERFRONT"

Please "LORD" don't let me forget that the name of Industrial Blvd. has now officially been changed to "Riverfront". As my wife can verify, I tend to be (alot) forgetful and I am sure an angry customer will call, upset that I told them to turn left off of I-35 and Continental and drive until you get to Industrial Blvd. The signs have now been changed to Riverfront. I will apologise ahead of time. In about a year and a half the new Suspension Bridge will be completed. Parkhouse/Continental is proposed to be the central station before the new walking bridge and potential Dart/Trolly bridge that will lead to the NEW WEST Dallas shopping area and later to Oakcliff. Yes, this little area is about to be transformed. Riverfront Blvd. will also be experiencing major changes in itself. This all is quite exciting.
Congratulations to the new LuLa B's West that officially opened last night with an incredible blowout. We are always glad to see new shops in the area. For the collectors of Mid-Century collectors there seems to be a big push in the Trinity District Antique area for the look. Just a few months ago John Bacile opened his Antique Shop and Mall on (Riverfront Dr.) and calls it "Antiques Moderne". The place is an experience to say the least!! You will be pleased!!

Yes, we are ready for Christmas with our displays of Vintage Christmas ornaments. Last week was Grueling to say the least!!! Thanks all of you for the kind words regarding my 92 yr old Fathers passing.
Like my wedding day, I was able to channel a little of my anxiety by squeezing in an important antique sale or two. A long walk on my property and photos of one young doe also helped divert anxiety.
Last Saturdays Street Sale was one of our best turnouts ever. The weather was FABULOUS !!! What Fun !!!

This last week brought in a new load of antiques. My favorite this week was a fabulous and unusual Mid-Century Hans Olsen Danish Modern dining room table and chair set. I also found a wonderful signed Louis C. Tiffany bud vase, an incredible LARGE and Old Shabby Gilt mirror, several old Wedgewood pieces, a great 19th Century slave tintype, chandelier, art pottery, several nice frames, two Florentine pieces, several pieces of fine jewelry and Florentine jewelry box and shabby chic style painted chair.

I wish I could have photos of these items but due to a death in the family I needed to leave town for a few days and hope to be able to return for the coming Saturday's Trinity District Antique Street Sale. I will try and post photos at a later date. Our store will be open this week.

With the return from the semi-annual Warrenton/Roundtop Antique Show we are still in the long process of putting the store back together. We've had... lots of fun.. getting ready for the local Industrial Trinity Antiques Street SALE which will be occurring on Saturday,October 31st. We've had a few dealers interested in setting up in front of the store but unfortunately (as seen in Warrenton) I can't predict the weather. But neither can the Weather man.
I ran to Kansas last week and brought back a full load. It's a toss up but I do have a few favorites, the albino coyote, the turn of the century Muskie, the pyrography table, the white dresser and white desk, the 19th century gilt / lacquered pedestal, the yard long florals and the Acoma vase.

With conditions like this it's amazing anyone showed up. Big Daddy and family from LA, Cat Daddy and family from Seagoville, Tx, Heidi Chapman and Portia, Cody Foster from Nebraska and Gina (Peacock Park) from Michigan were all there for the party. The newcomer this year was Mindy and Dave (Primitives n' Poetry). The rain held out for the most important event... Prom Night at Royers/ Zapp Hall - Warrenton, Texas. Look close.. is that Rachel A??? Theresa's blog party and book signing "The Find" by Stan Williams was also a big hit. Shopping was great as always and it is soooo hard to stay in the booth and not drag more inventory back to the point customers can't get in,,, it's a storage space,, sorry, this stuff is not for sale!!! Pack up is coming in few days and the weatherman is predicting more rain. It has been great to see everyone again... 17 years now!!

LARGEST ANTIQUE SHOW IN THE MIDWEST

The rain finally stopped and we are now setup and ready to go. The shopping in Warrenton has been great despite the weather. The weekend weather is going to be a blast with sunshine and warm weather. If yesterday was any indication to what's to come, it looks like this show may be one of our best ever. Our display took about 4 days to set up but due to the fact we had the largest amout of inventory ever and the rain lasted for 4 days.

With only a week left before the Round Top Show begins it looks as though the rain (and snow in some areas) is now slowing down and I feel we will have another fabulous Show. With many other dealers in the Dallas area packing, it looks as though our luck is holding. This last week we again managed to acquire a few pieces in between the estate sale and installing our new sign. A wonderful architectural piece and a great green cabinet will help our look. It always helps to reflect on our past heritage and our future goals. Without both life would be very empty. The digital age is great but I always try and remember to print a few photos along the way for the present and future relatives.

I always think that I won't have anything to post until I start looking around at what I have found during the week. All of a sudden, I find that surprisingly I have really come on to a stash of wonderful new treasures. This week was no different. As a matter of fact I came up with so many items I will just highlight the dozen or so that hit me in the face. The larger items like another white harvest table and industrial glass top/ iron base table, two others not shown, two chandeliers, one not shown, my favorite is the OLD concrete Buddah and frog, a few paintings, another wonderful FruFru kingsize velvet headboard, a set of Sheffield French Ivory handled Hotel Silver, and a Japanese Kutani Coffeepot. Gina's favorite pink ornaments, blue 1960's fabric and bronze/ gilt curtain rod brackets are her treat.

I've got a great story concerning the book "Horses and Homes" but have to run now.

>This week we focused on our son's College prep. trip to St. Louis. With two awesome tours in a beautiful city, we managed to squeeze in a couple of Estate Sales and a trip down Cherokee Street which is the equivalent to Industrial Blvd. in Dallas. If only we had taken a larger vehicle, never large enough, we would have managed to stay longer and find more goodies. Forest Park and a couple of Museums managed to swallow up the time. A few of our finds were this 16ft. Turkish Kilim, the sweet badger, compote (a sucker for compotes), meat cover, and the obscure coconuts. The green harvest table is a Dallas find and is not one we would have tied to the top of the car.

The theme this week was BEAUTY. We got in many items with exquisite detail, and some real age. Alan hand selected some Old Indian Pawn jewelry-just for you Texas girls-lots of sterling and turquoise and it's all OLD. Don't you just love what age does for these items? What we love in this business and hold dear is cracks, staining , crazing and rarity- so the way I see it,,,,,us junker women are not getting older, we're getting better. Remember- it's not wrinkles and sun spots- it's crazing and patina!

Even the name Fibrella from El Monte, California and the chairs Krueger Metal Co. ,,,,, it would make a great breakfast set for $250. A little faded and rusted but cute. This definitly brings back memories of when this was the NEW look. When gas was .15 a gallon, just shortly after the war by 10 yrs. Oh yes,,, there was the trendsetting CALIFORNIA... how to get there on the ONE two lane highway. Been there, done that and really don't care to go back.... selling the chair set and moving on.

This was such a busy week, last week, we spent all our time pricing and not much blogging. We hit one of those weeks where we found tons of smalls and had to sort, clean, price, arrange, etc. Among part of the stuff was a ton of sewing items, hand made lace, buttons: velvet buttons (Ahhh!!), Mother of Pearl buttons, silk threads on wooden spools and craft items. We also purchased 2 Victorian framed florals, one landscape, a couple of chairs (one velvet! Lovin the velvet!!) Tons and I mean hundreds of Vintage Christmas ornaments in blue, silver, pink..(pinch me)! Look out at Warrenton- I'll be behind the mountain of Christmas ornament boxes! Reeeeediculous, but somebody's got to buy it..Right? Gina
My favorite is the OLD cast iron Terrier boot scraper, still attached to the concrete. We picked up a UT football helmet piggy bank, empty.. and if Ben has his way and makes it to UT next year it will stay empty. A couple of heavy concrete fountains, a Corday figurine, couple of pieces of jewelry, and for once..no lighting. Even the Kitchen sink this week. Alan

This week's finds include 2 crystal Chandeliers, a crystal candelabra lamp, lace bedspread, tulle tablecloth(too cool!) a very handsome large trophy cup, plateau mirror, and a large crockery vase with birds. I also added to my Christmas stash (Pinks!) I know, I know, it's sick how much Christmas I have, but I'm among friends, right? The way I look at it- I can keep what I want and then get the rest to it's rightful new owner, right?! It's a higher calling... Gina..

Look at the French Loot we landed last week!! Lots of lovely smalls. A dome with brass ormolu, etc., small frames with bows, binoculars, chocolate box, travel book of Paris with maps, french clocks, French fossil books, etc, etc, etc, and saving the best for last--- AWESOME little pink boxes- each an inch square w/ French writing! ( I owe that to my friend Maggie Tarasoff..she snagged them for me. With friends like that, who needs enemies? )

Monday Uppers for July 13th

HOT!!!! Do I need to say anything else!! It's kinda wierd how things work. This last week was a chair week. It looks like we were able to pick up about a dozen chairs of all kinds. Featured are a pair of oversized down filled Country French chairs. For anyone looking to match this color, it's not every day that one would stumble on even one of these. What a statement!! We also picked up a single down filled Country French armchair. Caned back and seat with cushion this chair is silverleaf and cream color. Very nice! Country French satin covered bench, needlepoint chair and unusual oversize armless chair. Not shown are a pair of white heavy metal garden chairs, a pair of old heavy metal /iron garden benches and a couple of unusual metal outdoor chairs. We even picked up a toile chalkboard. One of my favorite is a great 2 piece cream color plant stand with ivy. The two tier French wire stand is nice too! We did find a few smalls, frames, porcelain, one painting, books and a few 50's Christmas items. For the people that like mid-century we found an unusual umbrella stand.

Speaking of Mid-Century,, we need to welcome our new neighbors at Antiques Moderne Mall.. 1208 Industrial Blvd. Looks like they still have a few spaces available.

Word has it that ANOTHER mall, next door to the White Elephant will be opening in October. This mall will be an eclectic style and will surely bring more traffic to the area. Who says this area is dead??? We can hardly wait until the new bridge arrives!!! Progress is really starting to show with the shutdown of I-35 this weekend and the miles of traffic it has really gotten attention.

Gina and Portia here.. We scouted the Dallas World Trade Center June Gift Buyer's Market. (Sorry, we respected showrooms' privacy when it comes to no photo rules). But they can't stop us from blogging about it right? Well, there was a lot of eco-concious (& budget friendly) design work-again we saw lots of natural and organic fabrics (burlap, hemp, cotton, linen) as well as lots of roots, vines, branches, rocks, shells, bark, etc, in every kind of container imagineable. We noticed a big Indian influence( from the movie Slum Dog Millionaire we assume). Showooms seemed to be either clean and pared down or full blown "sensory attack" stacked full of small items (inexpensive impulse buys?) We didn't notice quite as much tween stuff for the kids, but there was still lots of jewelry to be had- especially charm-like chains that can be added on to (long shelf life!) We saw our friend Jeff Krause in his brand new permanent showroom the Round Top Collection. He and his family have strong connections to Round Top, Texas. He sells metal decor that would brightenthe dreariest day(http://www.thertc.com/) He also used very cool antique furniture and props in his showroom that he buys @ Country Garden Antiques! (Jeff is talented and smart!) Well, I could go on and on, but in the interest of time: Still lots of French, still natural.. birds, brighter colors are stronger than 6 months ago, India, jewelry (duh!) Neutral larger pieces with bright accents, clean or clutter- your choice! Signing off on the topic till the really big market in January. (By the way, Chartreuse, one of Portia's favorites was really strong! Such good taste!!)

Monday Morning Uppers Sale July 6th

Miles and Miles from Texas. Our 4th of July weekend trip took us to the farm in Kansas. Mostly on the tractor cutting grass but we did squeeze in time to shop for antiques. This week we were able to pick up a pair of wonderful Victorian doors. I will be taking off the new hardware and installing the old but with oval beveled glass and old white paint the look is great. We also were able to pick up several pieces of ironstone, a great old victorian scrapbook and several other books, an awesome hanging ceiling lamp and other smalls. Due to the holidays there wasn't alot going on and several places I normally stop were closed but we're glad to be back.

Our 17 year old son Ben said I DO! But not for real yet. He never knows what he will see when he walks into our shop at the end of his work day or school day. Well, last night all he knew was there were several beautiful women with one in a wedding dress. So of course he walked in, looked around for about two seconds and shouted "I do!" without missing a beat. I don't know where he gets that sense of humor! How awesome! Well, believe it or not our Garden Sale was a record breaking sucess - despite mother nature's wild rains and winds last Thursday. We lost power both at our store and at home. Oh well, when the going gets tough the tough get going!!! Our customers could not be stopped on Thursday evening even though we thought they might be coming in boats instead of cars. Friday we had a bigger turnout than ever. Take a look at the photos and remember that there is more where that came from.

With a little help from our friends it looks as though this years Antique Garden Sale is about to begin. RAIN and/or SHINE won't be able to stop us now. We're very happy about how everything has come together and has grown since our first show over 5 years ago. It has certainly evolved from the days of " City Cafe" owner who has now gone on to bigger and better things in California. With no hesitation at all, Portia took the bull by the horns and has brought the show to a new high. "What a trooper!!" Looks like a larger back yard will SOON be in order.
As we said Rain or Shine Thursday night at 6pm we will open the gate. There are still odds and ends to do between now and then and we would seriously like to stop and help each and every one of you with purchases between now and then but we will need concentrate our time to making sure the sale goes off without a hitch. If any of you are not able to get to the show Thursday night we will be opening to the public all day Friday from 9am-4pm.

Here is hoping your summer's off to a grand beginning. I know our son, Ben (17), is glad school is out. We are loaded with outdoor and garden items & getting ready for the Antique Garden Sale. The sale will be held at Portia's house (4224 Allencrest) In case you havn't heard it will begin June 11th evening 6pm-9pm with refreshments and also June 12th 9am-4pm when the general public will be joining us. There will be plenty of great stuff at great prices. Alan has been busy stocking up on merchandise for the once-a-year only extravaganza. Portia swears she is going to have him followed sometime to see where he gets his stuff. I always reply "Good,,, and when you find out, let me know cause he won't even tell me!! I guess he's too afraid I'll brag and reveal his secret sources-Whatever! After several months of illness and surgery we are back in full swing. Spring is springing and summer is staring us in the face. We are going to be able to pull off our annual SPRING GARDEN SALE. It will be held at it's usual location ( Portia Maloney's). The date of the event will be Friday, June 12th 9-4. We will be hosting a presale for anyone interested on June 11th from 6PM-9PM with NO early admissions........... Weather permitting it should be a great show with more than ever Garden and Antique items. Keep checking the blog for more updates as the date gets closer.

On Monday we will be posting a new theme for our computer customers. It will be called "Monday Uppers" and will be postings of new acquisitions of the previous week. Six months has flown by but it is soon approaching time for the Semi-Annual Roundtop Antique Show. We have probably collected more smalls since the last show than ever. The quality of the small isn't a problem either. We are really pleased with what we have found and it all seems to fit in well.

My friend Portia and I made our annual trek to the Dallas Market at the World Trade Center in Dallas last week. I attended several trend seminars by retail experts. Portia & I also hit the main showrooms. Here's the scoop in a nutshell:

TRENDS: Wood. Natural driftwood-made into lamps, lighting, stands, & furniture.
Glass. It was everywhere! Especially BIG clear glass pieces.
Color. Big colors were RED & YELLOW, especially blue-reds. All shades of
grays are still strong, and the richer, stronger pastels are "in".
All shades of aqua & blue are just like green now-considered earth
colors, and are staples.
Nature. Stones, fossils, wood, bamboo, straw . . . Get Some!

Other stuff we saw: White leather & vinyl, natural fabrics, metal and straw containers, "going green" themed things. Looks like it's one extreme or the other-the extreme natural/raw look or crazy bright candy colors.

I must say that last year was a good year. We came through the year all healthy and ended up with some great inventory. This year we had the opportunity to conduct a couple of excellent Estate Sales. The first was a long time Captain for American Airlines. This world traveler had some fabulous collections in aviation dating back to the early 30's. Along with his collections came his wife's, a long time antique collector/dealer. ----To end the year we were blessed - or cursed - with an unbelievable home so stuffed with wonderful antiques that it made things quite challenging. John was the personal beautician for Greer Garson for years. The stories we heard about the world travels of John (many not being able to be repeated) made this business relationship quite special. John's Rolls Royce, the $10,000+ centerpiece we sold, and art collection were inspiring, not to mention the flower gardens he created. http://s201.photobucket.com/albums/aa19/alangal/estateNov08/ Both Spring and Fall Roundtop/Warrenton Antique Shows turned out to be our top shows ever. The weather was cooperative and so was the buying. Zapp Hall has always been good for us. The atmosphere with Cheryl & Mike LeHane and Cheryl's family have made us feel like a part of their family. Considering we have been in the same Zapp Hall location for the past 16 years tends to bond one another. Our baby (Ben) that spent his first Roundtop in a bassinet under a display will be going to College in a few years. His love/hate relationship with the business is now beginning to blossom: from the Pokemon booth he once thrived at, to his paintings that he sold, to his Butterfly Collections, to now-Photography (his latest passion). Just wondering if someday he may advance his skills to a Cosmetic Surgery booth at Zapp Hall, since he's considering a career in medicine.
